Prayer: Help us, dear God, to feel strength in you. Amen.
Reading: Isaiah 40:21-31 (Click to read text) Stop and GROW: After reading the text, discuss/ponder the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Book of Faith questions, which are part of Camp Mount Luther's GROW Time with campers. QUESTION 1: What scares, confuses, challenges, or doesn’t make sense to me in this text? QUESTION 2: What delights me in this text or is my favorite part of the story? QUESTION 3: What stories or memories does this text stir in me? QUESTION 4: What is God up to in this text? Reflection: Two songs come to my mind when I read this passage. The first, and most obvious, is the hymn, “On Eagle’s Wings.” You may have heard it before. In Evangelical Lutheran Worship, it is Hymn #787. The chorus reminds us that “And he will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hand.” The second song that I think of is “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel. They sing, “When you're weary, feeling small; When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all. I'm on your side!” Both of these songs are good reminders for us, as is this passage from Isaiah, that God is there for us. When we are feeling weary, exhausted, and feel like there is no place to turn, God is there, waiting for us to swoop in and raise us up like an eagle. We can gain strength from our God to be able to continue to run, and walk, and deal with all of life’s struggles. –Chad Hershberger, Camp Mount Luther Director
