Prayer: Dear God, use us and our words to build up and encourage those around us, both in our homes and our communities. Amen
Reading: Psalm 52 (Click to read text) Stop and GROW: After reading the text, discuss/ponder the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Book of Faith questions, which are part of Camp Mount Luther's GROW Time with campers. QUESTION 1: What scares, confuses, challenges, or doesn’t make sense to me in this text? QUESTION 2: What delights me in this text or is my favorite part of the story? QUESTION 3: What stories or memories does this text stir in me? QUESTION 4: What is God up to in this text? Reflection: Words are powerful. According to Psalm 52, they can either devour or proclaim. Those who use words to destroy or deceive will be uprooted. Those who speak words of thanks and proclaim God's name grow like a tree. I seem to be checking Facebook and other news feeds more often lately. After days of being "unplugged" at Family Camp, I was so disheartened and discouraged to get caught up on tragedies that had occurred that week. But why do I keep checking so frequently now? I may just be hoping to come across some good news in the midst of so much bad. There is good news but, as the media presents things, more headlines are going to be bad. More words will devour than proclaim God's love. So, I am going to start a new habit of the heart. Before clicking on that USA Today app, I am going to pick up the prayer list from my church. Every time I think I need to look at what is going on out there in the world, I am going to first search my soul for words to proclaim God's love to those in need. --Ruth Gates
