Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for your example of what it is to love. Let my faith be known by the example I live and how I show love to others, remembering always your love of me. Amen.
Reading: John 13:31-35 (Click to read text) Stop and GROW: After reading the text, discuss/ponder the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Book of Faith questions, which are part of Camp Mount Luther's GROW Time with campers. QUESTION 1: What scares, confuses, challenges, or doesn’t make sense to me in this text? QUESTION 2: What delights me in this text or is my favorite part of the story? QUESTION 3: What stories or memories does this text stir in me? QUESTION 4: What is God up to in this text? Reflection: Have you ever heard Brad Paisley’s song, “Those Crazy Christians”? It is one of my favorites. Sung from the perspective of an observer trying to understand a group who seem to look for excuses to bake casseroles and congregate, praying all the time, flying off to third-world countries, forgiving transgressions, and tending to the sick and poor. He ends the song with the speaker’s confession that if he ever needed help, he would call on “those crazy Christians.” I looked up the meaning of this phrase – Maundy Thursday – to learn (again!) that maundy comes from “mandatum” or commandment. And what a fantastic mandate Jesus has given us. To be known for our love. Jesus loved the rich, the poor, sinners, the sick and the shunned. His followers included housewives, tax collectors, divorcees, fishermen, His mother, many brothers. No matter what other labels you are branded by, above all these be known for your love of humankind. --Heather LeBlanc
